Circuit Core 007 Resurrection part.2 is out now so we decided to interview Tapage about his collaboration with Chem D and more
Q. Ok the most boring one : present yourself
A. I'm Tapage.... like... noise... in French... but I stopped worrying about the pronunciation years ago...
I'm known for making any kind of music I like to make, which ranges from the most abstract noise to elegant ambiences.
Every now and then I collaborate with folks within the industrial hardcore community
like Ophidian... The Outside Agency, and sometimes that works out quite well... I guess...
Q. What are your current projects ?
A. My current projects revolve a lot around live electronic music, developing instruments and playing live with them: these instruments are inspired by chaos and control.
Next to that I'm also writing a new album of ambient music and compiling another album of previously unreleased tracks... and The Void* (a band I'm playing in) will release their debut vinyl 'Values' around May
Q. The track on the Circuit Core Resurrection part 2 ep with Chem D has a long story
A. Yeah... So... Indeed around 2005 I started writing a new track, might even have been in mad tracker...
I was also working on the Void Sector remix so I was already in an uptempo-ish mood those days
So I made a bunch of kicks and wrote the melodies / harmonies for a break
and... then saved the file and stored it for a bit.
My machine back then ran into CPU problems which made it really hard to work on certain stuff (kept on crashing), over time I forgot about the track.
Years later I met you at HKU, found out you were into uptempo stuff and the idea to collaborate popped up... Instead of starting from scratch I thought it might be nice to scavenge the old hard drive to see if there were some dusty gems in the vault.
So... bounced some tracks (which was a lot easier with the newer computer)
and let you have a go at it then it still took half a decade to get it done hahaha
Q. Are you going to have time to do some more Hardcore ?
A. I'm only doing Hardcore oriented stuff when I really feel like doing that... Which is too often, I don't like to write a powerful energetic track when my mood is much more melancholic or dreamy or sad or...
Q. What do you find fascinating in hardcore from a sound artist perspective ?
A. Managing the intense energy is what its all about in Hardcore in my opinion. Everything is loud and noisy and you still have to point that mess into a clear direction.
If you manage that, you get the combination of escapism & goosebumps through pure musical energy.
Q. Where do you see yourself in the upcoming 5 years ?
A. Interesting question... I think I'll be moving out of the Netherlands at some point. Hopefully dividing my time between writing music, creating new instruments and touring with that all over the world
I'm getting more and more into audio-visual collaborations as well which inspires me a lot lately
I'm never short on new ideas for projects so I guess I'll keep myself busy
Q. Dolphins or Crocodiles ?
A. Meander and I wrote an album Etched in Salt a few years back. Each track heavily influenced by various marine creatures, one of the tracks on the album is called Osedax
Osedax, by Tapage & Meander http://tympanikaudio.bandcamp.com/track/osedax
Cool thing... All sounds on that track are coming from recordings of dolphins and whales and such
So I feel like I have to pick Dolphins on this one... Though I'd pick a jellyfish if the option was there...
Thank you Tijs for this interview

WE HAD AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION DURING A COFFEE (ESPRESSO OFF COURSE) WITH N!CK CO-HOST OF THE CIRCUIT CORE RADIO SHOW
interview by Chem D
Q. Present yourself for who does not know you.
A. Wait a second is this gonna be recorded?... (Laughs). My name is Nick, I was part of Thunderdome Radio crew for a few years, I played hardcore with Bas my collegue and friend as N!CK and Red Fraction, we also played as the Thunderdome Radio Crew and I stopped playing Hardcore at the last Thunderdome.
Q. How old are you ?
Q. Why did you stop then ?
A. Good question I think because I lost interest in Hardcore... When I started playing Hardcore I was a really dedicated “gabber”, and to be a dj performing at high levels you have to be dedicated 24/7 to the scene, 2 years ago for several personal reasons I couldn’t be dedicated 100% to the scene, so I decided to stop with the last Thunderdome as milestone.
Q. When did you start ?
A. When I was 10 I got my first record player... and I was in my first Thunderdome Radio show when I was… (thinks) 11.
Q. There are photos from that evening…
A. Yeah there are loads of photos, hope you include them in the interview
Q. What are your plans for the future ?
A. I never stop being busy with music, I always listen to music, I always follow artists, check out new releases, I study Music Management and right now i’m doing an internship at ID&T so I never been away from music and... yeah... I do want to get back to it, but, when the time is right. Right now I want to just focus on my studies for the next year and a half
Q. Where do you study ?
A. At the HKU- Utrecht School of Arts
Q. But hey you are in Circuit Core Radio right now so you still have stuff to do in the hardcore scene… We know each other cause of multiple reasons and one of them is off course Thunderdome Radio and the other one is that we have colleagues and friends in common 3DJL first of all and MC No-ID and Mark who are hosting the show…
A. I didn’t even know you guys knew each other, those guys are funny as hell so when I heard you were doing a radio show with them I said F$£K yeah I wanna be part of it
Q. So we maybe we will be finally capable of giving an answer to your question before the end of the year...
A. Yeah what is Frenchcore ?
Q. So try to answer yourself now...
A. Well my journey into Frenchcore started 2 or 3 weeks ago and I’m still trying to figure out what it’s all about… laughs... right now it’s still Boom Boom Boom in my head, but hopefully I will find out, thanks to the Circuit Core show, what Frenchcore is all about
Q. It’s all about inflatable dolphins
A. Women in bikini & vodka
Q. So what can we expect from you at the Circuit Core Radio Show ?
A. I’m just a random white guy in the background asking stupid questions to people
and hopefully I can show to the Frenchcore public the other side of the EDM spectrum
Q. What are the track that you listen in this moment?
A. Major Lazor - Lean On and Jack U - all the album but the track "Mind" in particular
Q. Dolphins or crocodiles ?
A. I’ll go for dolphins dolphins are cute
Q. Rum or Vodka ?
Thanks man !
